Jump, conformation or temperament: what do YOU look at first in a young horse? Comment below!

It takes four very different eyes to pick a Monart horse. One selector on the poles, up close and personal with every horse. One who`s a stickler for the jump. One checking conformation from teeth to tail. And one keeping everyone on track, and calling it when the verdict`s split.

Four selectors, one standard. If a horse makes the catalogue, it`s been past all of them.

The 2026 Online Catalogue is now live at themonartsale.com.

The Monart Sale wouldn’t exist without its vendors. This one is for them. 🙌

Every horse you’ll see in the catalogue started years before selection day. Breeders planning four years out, producers putting in the time, then driving from the four corners of Ireland to see it all come down to a few final minutes.

Selection day feels like competition day for everyone here. Quarter to eight in the morning, trucks coming up the lane, and the same question on everyone`s mind: could this be the next superstar?

To every breeder and producer who makes this sale what it is, thank you.

What does “uphill” actually mean? Comment your definition below!

Light, free-moving, taking more weight behind and coming up through the shoulder. Or as one selector puts it, like a plane taking off.

It matters most at speed: a naturally uphill horse keeps its balance even when galloping cross-country. That is what the selectors look for in every event horse.

Why are Irish event horses the best in the world? Comment below, we know you have opinions!

It starts in the field: summers turned out on natural terrain, streams to splash through, banks to play on. The best ones start jumping them early. Add sound limbs, good conformation and that famous Irish grit for the last two minutes of a cross-country course, and it’s no mystery why the world comes to Ireland to buy its event horses.

Team mare or team gelding? Comment below and defend your answer!

"You ask a mare and tell a gelding," as the saying goes. Our selectors don`t fully agree on this one: some will take a mare any day of the week, others have ridden mostly geldings their whole career. Where everyone lands: a good mare will never quit on you.

What makes a horse "ATHLETIC"? Comment your definition below!

This is The Monart Definition: we take the words the horse world uses every day and ask our selectors what they actually mean. First up, athletic. Push from the hind end, loose in the shoulder, light on their feet... and one selector`s ballerina-in-a-rugby-squad comparison that explains it better than any textbook.

Did we get it right? Tell us your definition, we`ll be sharing the best ones.

Brian and Meabh Flynn of MBF Sporthorses have been producing young horses together for 15 years in Kill, Co. Waterford, and between them they cover everything: she looks for the big walk and the canter, he looks for the good head, the front and the blood, two different views that complement each other perfectly. What they agree on: coming to Monart is a no-brainer, and the dream is always a happy buyer.
